Fraudsters frequently attempt to impersonate HMRC to trick individuals into handing over money or personal details. It’s important to remain vigilant and ensure any communication you receive is genuine.
HMRC will never contact you by text, email, or phone to request personal or financial information. They only communicate by post, sending official letters to your registered address.
If you’re owed a tax refund, HMRC will automatically send you a cheque by post within 14 days of the date on your letter. If you’re due refunds for multiple years, you’ll receive a single cheque covering the total amount.
To check or claim a legitimate refund, always use the official HMRC website: www.gov.uk/tax-overpayments-and-underpayments/if-youre-due-a-refund
• Never share personal or banking details in response to unexpected messages or calls.
• Be suspicious of urgent demands or threats claiming to be from HMRC.
• When in doubt, contact HMRC directly through their official channels.
